Atlanta, GA. - January18, 2013 “ Nineteen year old, Jordan œPROOFY Cannon is ranked the #1 professional video gamer in the world on œCall of Duty, and is speaking out in support of video games. œI want to take a bold step out from behind my console for a moment to let President Obama know; myself, my team and millions of other kids are responsible youth who play videos with no effects of violence. Politicians are placing broad blame on the video games we play, without talking to us, states Proofy.
œI am saddened when I see and hear about the senseless violence and deaths that are caused in our country by the use of not just automatic weapons, but any weapon that mentally deranged individuals use to cause mass harm to a people, says 19 year old. Proofy, who has been playing video games since the age of 13 and playing professionally for the past four years. Proofy started playing to escape the violent world that took place right at his doorstep while growing up in Detroit, Michigan.
Growing up in a single parent home in Southwest Detroit, born to a Puerto Rican mother and an African-American father, Jordan found safety from falling prey to the gang-related path that his older brother and other peers took, by escaping in the world of video gaming. œHere it is that, society is trying to blame the rash of violence on video games and that's the very thing that saved my life. I wanted to tell my story and give voice, be the face that totally debunks what people are assuming about the effects of gaming on kids. When discussions take place about something of this magnitude, people like myself, other gamers, the health professionals, should all be included. That would save a lot of time and aimless funding, Proofy exclaimed.
œEvery time a tragic event occurs and an automatic assault weapon or hand gun is used, whatever the top selling game is during that time, get the sole blame and that should never be the case, states Proofy. He continues by saying, œI applaud my President for taking a stand to create new policies to regulate assault weapons as well as the initiative to study the effects that gaming has on these individuals, but the study should be redirected, as this is a mental health issue. A key focus should be on creating programs that help identify persons with mental health issues and seeking some type of resolve.
