There has never been a better time to act to reduce your carbon emissions. Such reductions should be EASY and SIMPLE. It’s about choosing what will work for your business. As part of our business offering we tailor a Carbon Response Plan for your individual needs and desires. But today to get you started, we have compiled ten simple tips that we found to benefit a variety of businesses. We believe that reducing emissions and saving money isn’t about going back to the dark ages and sitting in the candle light. It’s about making sensible decisions about the way we use things, and the technology we choose to buy.

After implementing these strategies, monitor the changes you can see in your electricity bills. Prices are only going to rise in the months and years to come. We aim for you to not even notice the price rise! If you reduce electricity consumption you can avoid increases in bills. It’s straightforward. Here are our top 10 recommendations for things you can start to do today:

1) Review Office & Warehouse or Factory Lighting.
- Reduce the time the lights are turned on during the day or night.

- If you have a ‘dark’ warehouse consider replacing some roofing sheets with clear roofing panel. Let the daylight in.

2) Office & Warehouse/Factory Lighting.
- Do all lights come on at once? Reduce the size of the lighting bank.
- Assess whether there are too many globes. Taking some out will reduce electricity consumption.

3) How long does the Air Conditioning run?
- Review the automatic turn on and turn off times. Some places have the air conditioning starting at 6.00am but employees don’t arrive until 8.00am.

4) How hot and cold are the Air Conditioning settings?

- Revise the temperature settings. Some units have a wider range between the lower and upper temperatures. The wider the range the more power is consumed.

5) Turn the Desktop Computers off.
- Make sure these are turned off at the end of the working day.
- Also the IT team can also alter settings to send computers into sleep mode when not in use for extended periods during the day.

6) Review IT data Centre for air conditioning temperatures.
- The air conditioning in these rooms is always cold. This is not necessary. Challenge the IT people to increase the temperature by a couple of degrees – even as high as 22 degrees.

7) How many Copiers/Faxes/Printers are there?

- Reduce the number of devices by using Multi-Function Devices (MFDs).
Not everyone needs a printer on their desk. Security codes can be set so that printing is done when the user is at the machine. This reduces paper usage as well.

8) When replacing White Goods
- Review refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and other white goods for their energy efficiency ratings. Many older machines are extremely ‘hungry’ in their electricity consumption.

9) How much Hot Water is there?

- How is water heated in your premises? Is it ‘gas on demand’, ‘off peak electricity’, or some other high energy method? Many hot water systems often run all night when nobody is around.

10) Replace globes in Office & Warehouse/Factory Lighting
- For fluorescent lights replace T8 globes with T5 or LED. T8 are about the size of a 50 cent piece; T5 are the size of a 10 cent piece. Electricity consumption is about half.

All of these techniques work to make a cumulative difference in your business. If you would be curious to know more about the benefits of becoming Carbon Neutral please review our website www.emissionsmanagement.com or email us at: info@emissionsmanagement.com
