MILWAUKEE, May 5, 2010 - The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, a division of Family and Economic Security, has recently announced that the Social Development Commission Multicultural Entrepreneurial Institute, Inc (MEI) partnership was chosen to be the 2010 Annual Governor’s Excellence in Community Action Award recipient. A presentation will be made at the WISCAP Annual Meeting.
In December 2009, MEI was selected by the Social Development Commission (SDC) to conduct a Small Business Entrepreneurial Program for 25 low-income entrepreneurs and emerging enterprises in Milwaukee County. The initiative was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and it was the largest award provided by SDC under the Act for a total of $437,500.
Mamadou Guisse, Director and Founder of Guisse Child Consulting, LLC and participant in the program, stated “Of all the business seminars that I attended, this entrepreneurial training is the most complete, and the most appropriate, in meeting my needs as a business owner in the brink of growth and expansion.” Mr. Guisse recently revamped his practice last month by leasing a location with training facilities for 25 individuals and plans to create two jobs in the summer.
This partnership’s mission was focused on assisting low-income entrepreneurs to become self-sufficient through a comprehensive small business program. This program provided business training, business and personal financial coaching, financial awareness, computer training, networking opportunities, and a potential start-up, or business, enhancement grant.
Business coaching is an integral part of the success of this multicultural program. Gina Jones, owner of Jones Creative, also stated ”The classes have been invaluable and, as a result, I have been able to finally register my business with a clear understanding of the best model to follow. Nelson Soler is a great instructor and his coaching staff is outstanding. I value, and appreciate, the multi-ethnic sensitivity incorporated in this program.”
The training programs created under this project aim at strengthening the success of low income entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs in Milwaukee County. Cross Management Services, Frontline Coaching, HBC Services, the Council for the Spanish Speaking, and the Latino Entrepreneurial Network are strategic partners in delivery of coaching and intensive services in this project which has created 10 jobs in Milwaukee.
