1970s Wedding Dresses
Wedding dresses have their own distinctive styles that have developed over the decades. Each decade has provided a new style of dress that brides have chosen to wear on their special day. The Simple Wedding Dresses of the 1970s had new style trends as well as a few from the 1960s.
Style
The overall style of ’70s dresses cannot be easily defined as women started taking an individual approach to fashion. More women opted for one-of-a-kind dresses so the necklines and hemlines differed. A popular choice was a Neo-Victorian-inspired look. Dresses were long in length, with the later years of the decade introducing long trains and veils for dramatic effect. The necklines were raised and sleeves were puffy and long. The Camelot sleeve was also created during the decade.
Fabric
Traditional fabrics like silk, chiffon and satin were used for dresses. The introduction of nylon as a wedding dress fabric meant a change in style. The man-made fabric was used for sheer necklines, long trains and veils, as it was relatively cheap to buy.
Embellishments
To accessorize the dresses, traditional embellishments were added. Lace, beads and netting were sewn to necklines, sleeves, the bodice of the dress and veils. Ruffles were a popular choice to add some elegance to sleeves.
’60s Influence
Although the ’70s brought some new ideas to the designing of a dress, the 1960s left behind some fashion ideas. ’60s dresses were glamorous, with women wanting a dress inspired by Hollywood movie stars; short dresses, square-fitting bodices and the luxurious fabrics like silk and satin were also seen on brides. Some ’70s dresses adopted a short ’60s hemline, while silk and satin were used along with nylon.
