Residents of Wichita, KS are preparing themselves for the new and controversial youth summit taking place this weekend. On August 15, 2009 the New Beginning Seventh Day Adventist Church and The Rescue Zone TRZ-316 will be having the “2009 Got Swag?” Teen Summit. This event, which has been organized by a few young adult members of the church, is preparing for a big turnout.
This event is set to attract anywhere from 50-100 middle school to high school students to discuss the various topics that which have over the years helped to create a divide between youth and their parents. The event coordinator Justin Triplett has assembled a team of young adults who will help to facilitate the event. Serrgio Wilson a Wichita resident and facilitator was quoted saying “that this event is designed to help young people communicate more effectively with their parents and other adults and also to help fight the language barrier that exist between today’s youth and their parents.”
The event will be formed as a Q&A Session between the facilitators and the youth. Topics that will be discussed are: sex, drugs, suicide, gangs and materialism. Serrgio was quoted as saying that “this is sure to provoke conversation and debate among all involved since it will be discussed openly and in a religious setting”. The organizer and facilitators will also spend sometime discussing the rather popular term “swag” which is used a lot in the hip hop culture. This word has been used as a term of endearment and to celebrate an individual’s ability to showcase themselves through several forms of body language and speech.
This event is sure to have a great turnout. It’s already been discussions to have another summit later in this year since the pre buzz of this event has begun to attract a number of Wichita youth and their parents.
