The world of compact crossover utility vehicles moves forward at a lightning fast pace. With so many different companies vying for the attention of families shopping for a vehicle that can provide a comfortable ride, great efficiency and practical utility, it is necessary for automakers to invest heavily in technology in order to stay on the cutting edge. It is this type of forward-thinking innovation that has driven the development of the 2010 Hyundai Tucson.
The 2010 Hyundai Tucson (MSRP $18,995) is an all-new effort to engage both the hearts and minds of a wide range of drivers. Not only does the Tucson capture the imagination with its exciting looks and city-friendly dimensions, it also packs a technological wallop that broadens its appeal to both busy families and those who need the extra cargo and passenger capacity that it provides over a traditional sedan.
Lurking behind the Tucson’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design language are a number of structural advances that have helped the compact crossover tip the scales at 61 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. This is despite offering 3.3 inches of additional length and being a full inch wider than any previous version of the Tucson. High-strength steel helps to keep the vehicle’s construction strong while reducing its overall mass.
The net benefit for 2010 Hyundai Tucson drivers from this carefully controlled weight loss is phenomenal fuel mileage. Both GLS and Limited trims come equipped with Hyundai’s 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine and return numbers of 23 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway. This makes the vehicle more efficient than almost any other compact utility vehicle available, in addition to being more efficient than the four-cylinder found in the older Tucson. The new engine’s rating of 176 hp and 168 lb/ft of torque doesn’t suffer one bit despite its miserly ways, thanks to the use of Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and a Variable Intake System (VIS) to improve airflow to the motor. Even with the addition of all-wheel drive, the Tucson remains more frugal at the pump than the competition.
Other advances that help to reduce the amount of fuel consumed by the crossover include electric power steering and low rolling resistance silica tires. While a six-speed manual comes standard on GLS models, an all-new six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual shift control is also available and comes standard on Limited trims. An ‘Eco Indicator’ is fitted to auto-equipped Tucsons to encourage drivers to adopt green-friendly habits – a special LED lights up when the vehicle is driven in the most efficient manner possible. Manual Tucsons benefit from a shift indicator light which is also tuned to maximize fuel savings. These technologies enable drivers to save as much as possible at the pump over traditional driving behavior.
Hyundai has always been committed to investing heavily in vehicle safety, and the 2010 Hyundai Tucson bears t
