These past couple of years, we have seen a surge in the issuing of music in vinyl (right alongside CDs and digital downloads), and we've also seen a surge with respect to re-issues in 180 gram vinyl, in both stereo and mono formats. It is amazing that, amidst all the latest technology, the vinyl LP has really held its own. And to me, it's no wonder. I have always considered vinyl to be the best medium for music, with its warm sound. Plus, there is just something not quite right about listening to great music and not having an album cover to read. I guess I am not alone, as the vinyl LP industry is actually picking up steam year after year. It's clear from the way people seem to prefer hearing and even seeing their music that there must be something right about the vinyl format.

I have found a lot of the classic albums I loved growing up being re-issued in 180 gram vinyl formats, as well as some 200 gram and standard formats. Being the audiophile I am, I could not be happier. For one, I get a level of quality with the recordings that I could only have dreamed of before. And also, I have been able to find a lot of albums that a) I could not have afforded otherwise, and b) I just couldn’t find in decent listening shape. I hope this has held true for you as well, as there seems to be a big surge in classic rock, jazz, oldies and metal re-issues.

With that said, it only seems fitting that we take a look at some of the records that were released over the past year, records that may very well be worth getting your hands on as a collector.

As far as a “Best of 2010” list, a few records immediately made the cut, at least on my list. When talking about a “Best of” list, whether you're more interested in great music or great collecting opportunities is a matter of perspective. But in either case, get them while you can! I am sure you can find more great records that are not on this list, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.
