Each year 33 million employees get the opportunity to sign up for a flexible spending account. They do this for the opportunity to save money by stretching their healthcare dollars. Starting at the end of 2012, employers will be forced to limit FSA accounts to a maximum of $2500.
Currently there is no set limit on what employees can put aside; however, many employers limit this amount to between $3,500 and $5,000. The impending changes can make it hard to budget for a big-ticket medical item such as LASIK, especially when keeping other potential medical charges in consideration as well. Fortunately, your maximum may be nearly twice that amount now.
It is a goal of many people considering LASIK to use their flexible spending accounts to pay for the procedure. They can still pay for LASIK after 2013; however, the amount of money they save will be drastically lower.
The benefit of using an FSA is that it allows users to set aside a certain amount of money before taxes are taken out of each paycheck. That means you decrease your taxable income and increase your spendable income! The money set aside can be used for medical related expenses not covered by insurance such as LASIK or orthodontia. This typically equates to a 20%-30% savings.
“We want to be sure everyone knows how important it is to plan ahead” stated Kelley Malin, LASIK Coordinator at Raleigh Eye Center. “I am amazed how many people do not know that their FSA benefits are going to change in 2013. It is a mission of ours to help educate the community on this” added Kelley.
If you are considering having LASIK, it is important to have your candidacy verified by the surgeon who will be performing your procedure prior to securing FSA elections. It would be disappointing to put a large sum of money aside only to find out you are not a candidate for either procedure.
Just because your FSA benefits are changing doesn’t mean you have to change your plans for LASIK, too. If you have been considering the procedure, now is the time! We understand that every budget is different. When you come in for a consultation, we can create a plan that works for you and your FSA.
