25% of Brits Unaware of Partner's Salary Details According to Latest DiscountVouchers.co.uk Research

The research showed that one in four Brits don't know how much money their partner brings home each month.

The poll's results showed that 27.25% of Brits who took part in the poll has no knowledge at all of what their partner's salary is. Furthermore the survey found that twice as many women as men have their own private bank accounts in which to keep money hidden - 8% of women compared with 4% of male respondents.

The DiscountVouchers.co.uk poll also asked about whether people have lied about what they pay for new outfits, with 43% of women saying that they have compared with 17% of men. The main motivation behind this was reported to be a guilty conscience.

The voucher codes specialist commissioned the research to gauge spending habits among UK consumers, and also found that 4 in 10 Brits often open and read their loved one's bank and credit card statements. 10% however said that they never even bother opening or reading even their own credit card and bank statements.

Psychologist Dr Penny Goldsbrough says: “This kind of behaviour is more commonplace than most people think, and it's typically in the sort of people who have low self-esteem and a fear of the unknown. In addition not trusting a partner means indulging in habits like opening partners' bank statements and having personal, private bank accounts in which to keep money away from a loved one.”

Dr Goldsbrough goes on: “Many women replicate their mother's behaviour in being secretive about their finances, it is a maternal trait. However we do also see a standard level of guilt about spending money in most people - yet being a spendthrift is nonetheless a common human trait.”
