Backgrounder
CoraMarie Clark’s trip to China (Beijing and Xi’an in April, 2011)
on behalf of The Tooth Fairy Children’s Foundation
3000 toothbrushes distributed to children in need
When CoraMarie arrived at a school in a poverty stricken area just outside of Beijing, 300 children squealed with unleashed excitement as she entered the room. The children had likely never seen anything quite like a tooth fairy with a six-foot wing span!
The children were dressed in uniforms, with their chairs strategically aligned in perfect, regimented rows.
Throughout the presentation, which was delivered with the help of an interpreter, you could have heard a pin drop. The children erupted into elated giggles as CoraMarie read her book, Emily’s Magical Journey with Toothena the Tooth Fairy. Two little volunteers were then dressed as molar teeth to help with the interactive presentation to show the children how to brush their teeth.
This was the first time these children had ever been shown how to properly brush their teeth. They seemed eager to learn about oral hygiene, excitedly making their way to the front of the room so they could take their turn to ask questions. They asked profound questions for six to eight year olds, seemingly grasping the importance of what they had just learned.
After the children’s questions had been answered, they came forward single file to receive their toothbrush from Toothena. They enthusiastically gushed in broken English, “Thank you!” Many saying “Thank you, oh thank you!” All but a few of the kids said thanks; those that didn’t seem too excited to be able get the words out!
At the end of the presentation, CoraMarie met with the Head Master, principal, interpreter and a few others. The Head Master passionately talked about how the children had learned so much about love through the presentation, something they had not been shown a lot of outside of their home environments.
He spoke of how important it is for the children to learn about love – not just knowledge – if they are going to be able to make it in the world outside of China. The Head Master mentioned the word Love seven or eight times as he spoke. He greatly appreciated all The Tooth Fairy Children’s Foundation is doing, and repeatedly said how he looks forward to their return and future work with more children in China.
On the Great Wall of China, kids from around the world surrounded Toothena, in awe as she talked about oral health. It’s amazing how kids want to stop, listen and learn about how to keep their teeth clean. So much worldwide goodwill for The Tooth Fairy Children’s Foundation was created in just a few short hours on the Wall.
Our goal of creating a grass roots movement for oral health has begun in yet another country, it’s thrilling to see kids so excited about keeping their teeth clean!
