$300 million dollars down the drain every year

$300 million dollars is wasted every year by perfume spillages when travelling.

Australia, Commonwealth of -- Free-Press-Release.com-- Sep 23, 2011 -- $300 million dollars is wasted every year by perfume spillages when travelling. The $30 billion dollar global perfume industry has consumers finding their fragrances leaking into their luggage when travelling on aeroplanes; where losing just 1% to spillage ends up costing consumers over $300 million dollars a year.

Women arriving and departing Australia, waste over $1.2 million annually.

Australian perfume designer Belinda Cook from B Fragrances has launched a range of luxurious perfume gels, specifically created to combat the issue of leaking bottles; a common problem when travelling, particularly flying. The perfume gels are a completely new product, designed to be non flame-able, leak proof, and which can be kept in carry on luggage, as they withstand cabin pressure fluctuations.

As fragrances have evolved into essential personal care items with 72% of people using their perfumes daily, and carrying them when travelling; the availability of air travel friendly perfumes, is starting to play an important role in the purchasing decisions of consumers.

At B Fragrances we believe you deserve daily pampering, perfume gels help you achieve this, even when traveling.

The $300 million figure is as accurate as I can make guestimate with educated reasoning.

Figures gathered from:
Industry research from NPD Group, in 2010 reported the global perfume industry generates annual sales of $30 billion which was backed up by Global Industry Analysis in Feb 2011.
Perfume survey conducted by B Fragrances in 2011 indicated that 72% of people who completed the survey travel with their perfumes and use them daily.
Part of the B Fragrances survey was conducted at the airport so I made allowances for bias in my figures; also allowed for people who travel with dab perfumes instead of atomisers; total bias reduction is 22%
My personal experience when travelling and that of survey participants indicated a common 2% spillage from atomisers.

So to arrive at the figure - I took 2% of annual sales divided by 50% (bias reduced people who travel with perfumes) to arrive at the $300 million figure. Best I can do apart from asking all travellers to weigh their perfumes pre and post travel and restricting perfume usage for the duration of the journeys.

Other things you may find interesting:
IBIS reported in April 2011 that perfumes which were once considered frivolous, fragrances have evolved into essential personal care items
Perfume survey conducted by B Fragrances in 2011 discovered convenient bottle size (35%) was the most important concern of perfume users followed closely by leak proof bottles (26%) & allowed on planes (20%).
