“There is no-one in the sport more qualified to produce a book about some of its greatest scores.” Shaun Edwards in the Foreword to 50 Of The Best

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 3, 2009 -- In his new book, 50 Of The Best, Martin Offiah, one of rugby league’s greatest ever players, presents his selection of fifty of the game’s greatest tries of all time.

Martin Offiah relives a few of his own tries - the spectacular, the significant and the memorable - from his record-breaking career tally of 501. But his selection mainly celebrates the achievements of other great players, team-mates and foes alike. From David Topliss to Kyle Eastmond, from Clive Sullivan to Wally Lewis, he considers legends, rookies, a few lucky breaks and some great stories from the game’s past and present.

Martin Offiah looks at the tries through the prism of speed and strength, tactics and teamwork and individual stealth. For him, those are the skills that make rugby league the fast, skilful and spectacular game he loves. He tells the stories behind great moments from the last 30 years, revealing the human aspects so often hidden.

In 50 Of The Best Martin discusses the massive changes in the sport over the last decade through the careers of its great players. Rugby league has progressed, changing almost beyond recognition whilst expanding and consolidating its base. Crowds and television audiences have grown. Opportunities rugby league now offers players are fundamentally different from when Martin’s career was launched by a surprise move from south to north, from union to league, from youth achievement to instant professional recognition over twenty years ago..

50 Of The Best is more than reminiscences from a great player. With the prospect of a World Cup to be staged in England in 2013, Martin also looks to rugby league’s future. He highlights how recent changes in the game can lift the sport to new heights of achievement and popularity, whilst also identifying some of its weaknesses.

Although almost a decade since Martin Offiah retired from rugby league, he remains a key figure in the sport that made his name. A regular commentator on television and in the press, he also acts as agent for some of rugby league’s rising young stars.

50 Of The Best by Martin Offiah is a personal reflection on rugby league past, present and future by one of the sport’s greatest legends.
