This is a trying time for many people. Whether or not your job is in jeopardy, it’s always a good idea to keep your job interviewing skill current. You never know when the opportunity for a great job could present itself. In fact, you could even find yourself interviewing to keep the job you currently have!
No matter what situation you find yourself in, it would probably be wise to keep your options open and make sure that you have an exit strategy in case the unthinkable happens and you find yourself back in the job hunt.
Here are 7 key job interview tips:
PREPARE- anticipate the questions they could potentially ask and be ready with an appropriate response. Remember that you want to appear polished and confident, not rehearsed and stoic. While your answers should be well-thought out, they must still seem genuine. It is also wise to learn what you can about the company, so as to let them know why you are a good fit.
PRACTICE- this is how you will best be able to achieve the honesty that you need to come across as sincere. Of course, your intention is not to present something that misrepresents who you really are, but offering the version of yourself is always a strong strategy.
PRIMP - always look your best. Again, you want to present the best possible version of yourself. Although you might not be a business-dress kind of person, if the job calls for it, then you must play the part. You should also remember to relax when it comes to formal attire; most people are uncomfortable in those clothes and only wear to work because they have to!
PEP TALK - set yourself up for success by focusing on your positive attributes. Get there early and pump yourself up with some affirmations. Move onto breathing exercises if your nerves get the best of you. With a little more time beforehand you will feel more at ease when the time finally comes
PRIDE - as the interview begins, remember to be proud of who you are and your accomplishments. This will translate as confidence, something that every hiring manager is looking for. Confidence is usually an early signal for leadership skills, which means you could have a bright future with the company.
PROFESSIONALISM - maintain eye contact and take your time to answer questions. Treat your interviewing supervisor or manager with the kind of respect you would give them if you already had the job. Let them know what they can expect from you if you were hired.
PERSISTENCE - this is a delicate but necessary final step. When the interview is over, it is okay to ask questions about things like expectations, salary, and benefits. Signify to them that you are also investigating their company and what they can offer you. This also applies to following up a few days later. Whether you send a brief "thank you" email or a simple phone call, let them know that you are serious about considering a position there and remind them again of why you are the best candidate.
