January 3, 2012

Shopping for a digital camera is a similar process to shopping for any other electronic device; the specifications of the camera are the most important elements to use when deciding which one to buy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 3, 2012 -- Unlike a few years back when you literally got what you paid for; cameras now come with advanced features and they are much more affordable. The advancement of technology has enabled manufacturers to increase their production levels and consequently reducing the price of digital camera brands. It is however important to learn about camera specifications and use them as the determining factor when shopping for cameras.

The resolution of a camera refers to the quality of pictures taken by the camera. The resolution is usually denoted in megapixels and generally higher megapixels indicate that the camera can capture high quality pictures. However, different camera brands have produce pictures of different qualities regardless of coming with the same resolution. For instance, a phone which comes with a five megapixel camera still produces lower quality pictures compared to a professional digital camera.
Usually, a digital camera will save the images taken in the JPEG file format. It is possible to find cameras which store images in other picture file formats. However, it is wise to stick to cameras which store images in the JPEG format because it is the universally supported file format; when transferring images between the camera and computers.

The exposure is another important specification to note when buying cameras. The exposure generally refers to the camera’s aperture which is the extent to which the lens will open and shutter speed which is the amount of time the lens will stay open. The aperture is expressed in F stops, and at the highest F stop which is expressed at F/11 the lens is usually almost closed allowing little or no light to enter into the camera. The shutter speed is expressed in fractions of seconds, indicating how long the lens will stay open at given apertures.

The other thing to note is that there are manual and automatic digital camera models. Most digitals cameras are automatic models, meaning that the camera comes with pre-set functions. An automatic camera is ideal for beginners or recreational photographers who do not know much about camera functions. However, those who want to learn how to take professional photographs will be better off with manual cameras. The focus and flash modes of cameras are usually expressed as automatic and manual. This should not be confused with the overall functionality of the camera; manual cameras still come with both automatic and manual flash and focus options. Beginners are better off going with the automatic focus option, which automatically places the subject to be photographed in focus for a clear picture.
