http://www.ndptacoma.org The National Day of Prayer is a time for people of faith to fervently seek God to revive our city of Tacoma and this nation. One pastor whose burden and vision for the people of Tacoma to draw closer to God and for Tacoma to become a shining city on the hill is Pastor Greg Martin, the senior pastor of Inspiration Bible Church. “These prayers are too big to be praying alone,” stated Pastor Greg. “Churches that pray together reach their city together!” As a result, he invited several other churches to join his congregation in praying at Tacoma’s first National Day of Prayer event four years ago in Wright Park, Tacoma. Since then, Pastor Greg has annually hosted and coordinated the prayer event at Cheney Stadium, where people have gathered together, transcending socio-economic, political, ethnic and denominational differences, humbling themselves before God, asking Him to heal our land and to change people’s hearts towards Him. Each year, the attendance and participation has grown and they welcome more local churches and dignitaries to attend.
Tacoma joins with the National Day of Prayer Task Force’s mission to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer. It is a call to mobilize all Christian communities to pray for America and its leadership in the seven areas of: Government, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church and Family. Over the last four years, there have been many individuals praying and seeking God at this citywide event. Some of the individuals have included: police officers, firemen, business leaders, medical professionals, military, local pastors, school principals, athletes and government officials. They’ve prayed for concerns such as safety, protection, peace and transformation in Tacoma and Pierce County.
The history of the National Day of Prayer dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. The call to prayer has continued through our nation’s history, including in 1795, when President George Washington issued a proclamation to set aside a day of public prayer and thanksgiving and in 1863 with President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting and prayer.” In 1952, an annual day of prayer was established by Congress, and signed into law by President Truman. In 1988, President Reagan permanently designated the day as the first Thursday in May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors including the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.
