A colourful celebration

(Free-Press-Release.com) March 17, 2011 -- Showered in colour, staff and students from Swinburne University of Technology celebrated Holi, the first major festival of the Hindu year.

Also known as the festival of colours, Holi was hosted by the Swinburne Punjabi Club and marked with coloured powder, a traditional Bollywood DJ, dance and Indian food.

Punjabi Club founder, Harpreet Singh Maan said that about approximately 200 people showed up to the event, which was held to share the rich Indian culture with Swinburne’s diverse communities.

“We celebrate Diwali/Bandhi Chorr Divas, Vaisakhi and Indian Independence Day every year. This year we have added a few more cultural events to the Swinburne calendar so that people can learn more about the culture and Indian students studying here can feel part of the occasion being away from their homeland,” Harpreet said.

The Swinburne Punjabi Club is one of the most active student clubs on campus. The club began in 2007 and aims to promote diversity and cultural understanding among different communities.

Holi is a spring religious festival celebrated primarily across India, Nepal and Sri Lanka by Hindus. The main day of the festival, Holi, is celebrated by people throwing coloured powder and coloured water at each other.
