New research from the company behind the UK’s leading free discount mobile application has revealed that a fifth of Britons would be more inclined to shop at their independent local stores
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 1, 2011 --
According to a study from the company behind the UK’s leading free discount mobile application, a fifth of Britons would be more likely to do their weekly shop in local independent stores if they were able to use their debit or credit card as a form of payment, as many local shops still operate on a cash-only basis.
The research was conducted by the company behind the MyVoucherCodes app, a free service which allows users to receive information on the current discounts and vouchers available at shops and restaurants in their local vicinity. 1,468 people over 18 were polled across the UK and were asked questions surrounding their shopping habits.
Respondents to the study were asked, ‘Do you regularly shop at your local independent stores?’ to which almost two thirds of people, 64%, answered ‘no’.
The respondents who didn’t shop at their local independent stores were asked to stipulate what changes could be made by the stores in question in order to make them consider shopping locally.
A fifth, 21%, stated that if they were able to use their debit or credit card as a form of payment, they would be inclined to shop locally more often.
Furthermore, 16% of the respondents who didn’t shop locally, cited that they would be prepared to use their local independent stores if they ‘supplied trolleys’ and 9% said ‘better deals’ would be a persuading factor.
Of the respondents that claimed to frequently shop at their local independent stores, 62% mostly purchase meat and fish from the independent retailers. Of the total respondents surveyed, just 1% said that they did their entire weekly shop using local independent stores.
Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:
“With the amount of deals and offers available in large supermarkets, I’m not surprised that the majority of people do their weekly shop there. However, with new money saving options available locally, it is becoming cheaper to shop closer to home.”
He continued;
“Our new money saving app is focused on helping to encourage the use of local independent stores. Although there is no problem with shopping at larger chain stores, it is important that we help support local businesses too. Shopping locally helps support your local area by feeding money back into local independent businesses. We would encourage shoppers to visit both larger chains and independent stores, to make sure both can compete effectively.”
