Whats the worst thing you can imagine when it comes to kayaking? The viral video of an adult killer whale breaching the surface and landing square atop of a kayaker is horrifying to watch, as is the thought of having your kayak roll and not being able to right yourself.
Even getting caught in a squall and pushed to sea with no sense of where your at, or which way to paddle are unsettling enough, but really these all pale in comparison to the nightmare that many new kayakers find themselves in sometimes weeks or a few months after beginning the sport.
The Kayaking Travesty
Kayaking can be a extremely satisfying sport. It lets you participate in nature without interrupting it. You are hooked the first time you see a herd of deer staring at you out of curiosity as you snap pictures passing by or have your breath taken away by sights not possible by any other means than a silent river passage.
But if your in the wrong type of kayak, if your paddles are not suited to your dimensions, you'll soon regret listening to your friends advise about buying a kayak, because your in agony and dreading having paid so much for a kayak that you are quickly growing to hate. That's the nightmare! That's the Travesty! Don't lose the passion out of ignorance.
5 steps to avoid a Kayaking Nightmare
Step One: Don't listen to friends advise on what type kayak to buy unless they are serious kayakers. Even then they might tell you what they like vs. what is best for you, your intensity and your physical build.
Step Two: Read reviews on kayaking as a sport, kayaks for sale, paddles and accessories. Become an informed purchaser. There are many different kayaks available such as sit-on-top (http://kayak-reviews-hq.com/emotion-spitfire-kayak), sit-inside, ocean, stand-on-top, inflatable, fold-able, angling (http://kayak-reviews-hq.com/emotion-mojo-angler-kayak) etc.
A good idea on kayak review sites is to find one which covers a variety of kayaks vs. type specific. If your unfamiliar with the unique attributes of kayak types, then going to an ocean kayak review site could do you more harm than good if your not sure of what all is available.
Step Three: After you've researched and narrowed down the style of kayaking which interests you and is available to you, first try to rent a kayak. Renting will help you decide if this is your cup of tea.
Try to rent from a reputable place which offers introductory lessons. Learn techniques, emergency procedures and find the best way to kayak vs. learning on your own. The better prepared you are, the more you'll enjoy the sport.
Step Four: Accessories can also prevent kayaking nightmares. A paddle which is too heavy will not be fun for long. If all you can think about is your arms are tired, it will make you lose enjoyment quickly. So try different paddles, learn which paddles are more suited to your body type. A good paddle may cost a quarter of your kayak expense, but if you can spend the day enjoying it, its well worth the investment.
Also how will you get your kayak from you house to the water? Do you need a Kayak rack? Is the kayak inflatable? Do you need a pump etc. Most kayakers invest in accessories that make life easier, for good reason.
Step Five: Kayak with experienced kayakers who can show you the ropes. Its one thing to get intro lessons, but another to have someone share their passion. Soon you'll find yourself passionate as well.
Kayaking can be a dream come true if you take steps to prevent a nightmare.
Kayaks can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars, plus kayak racks, paddles and other expensive accessories. To invest in all this and then decide you don't care for the sport is a nightmare after the fact. Its worse than having a killer whale breach on top of you and put on YouTube.
But with a little research, you can experience the dream of kayaking that so many now enjoy. To do so is easy. Review, review, review, start off with reviews which cover the sport in different venues, like whitewater, ocean, river kayaking. Then go to review sites which cover a variety of types of kayaks, like Kayak Reviews HQ (http://kayak-reviews-hq.com) for example.
Then focus in on a type specific review site if you still need more info.
Have some weekend fun and rent first, consider accessories suited to your build and needs. Then kayak with experienced kayakers to share the passion.
Live the dream, share the passion by promoting kayaking to friends. Learn, then love...Kayaking.
