A Mystifying Visit To Ronda

Although, the town includes a modern parador built on the edge of a cliff (where I am standing now), there are historic churches and palaces, which forms the real attraction for tourists. I visited the town to see one of the oldest bullfight rings of Spain that is situated in the center of town, but I was smitten by mysterious buildings and the natural highlights of the town. Certainly Spain is a lot more than bullfighting.

I was compelled to explore the town for the charm it offers was irresistible, thanks to my alquiler de coches (the car I hired in Madrid) that drove me through the town. The town is divided into an old part and a new part. Both these parts are joined by a beautiful bridge, which goes over the gorge.

The bridge is the favorite place for tourists, as it allows them to look down at the little stream and a garden beside the gorge. Ronda, being a small town is not visited by too many tourists and this makes it all the more appealing for tourists like me, who look for calm and serene natural harmony to replenish body, mind and soul.

The bridge took me to Palacio de Mondragon. This ancient building has now been turned into museum. This place dates to the days of the Moors and may have been the home of the Moorish King Abb el Malik. After him, Ronda was ruled by Catholic Monarchs and became a residence of King Fernando and Queen Isabella.

Now after number of diminutive renovations and remodeling, this royal palace has been made into a multifaceted museum offering relics of two different cultures (Moorish and catholic). However, for me the architecture remained the main appeal. Beautifully carved courtyards, gardens and architectural detail there are visual treat.

It is wonderful how I came to visit plaza de toros de Ronda the oldest bullfighting ring in Spain that was built in1784 in the neo-classical style by the Jose Martin de Aldehuela and was forced to prolong my stay. After having said so much about tranquility and stillness of the place, it was out of question not to visit the famous church of Santa Maria de la Encarnacion, La Mayor. With calm and composed interiors the place of serenity is said to have been a mosque that was later converted into a Catholic church.

Archeological evidence suggests that the Medina Mosque itself had also been constructed on top of an older Christian church dating from Visi-gothic times, however some myths suggest that this was built on top of an even older Roman altar, (possibly a temple to Diana). It was built in honor of the victorious Julius Caesar over the forces of Pompeii (the Roman name for Ronda) in 45BC. Apart from historical and archeological vestiges, this ancient building offered me the eternal peace of mind that I have been looking for. It rejuvenated me and brought me closer to myself.

Summarizing my mystic stay in this sagacious town, I am in my alqulier de coach once again on my way to explore another small town called Mijas in Malaga Spain.
