Success in Hard Times

Opening her doors at the height of the current recession, Soonja knew that her success would only come through dedication, hard work and an incomparable product. Starting work at 4AM and working in the bakery until late at night is not uncommon for her. Soonja’s insistence on perfect details and the highest standards have built her a fan base which has propelled the bakery to success. Business has been so good that she recently began expansion construction on her shop. “I feel good about the fact that I’ve created a few jobs in this tough economy”, Soonja says. She thanks her regular customers and word of mouth for her steady growth. Customers tell her that she is one of the best kept secrets in Dallas.

Growing Popularity

As Soonja’s popularity increases, she has been humbled by the attention she receives for her art. “My customers are so happy. I love to see them smile when they see their cake for the first time.”, she says. Soonja is proud that her cakes have been the centerpiece at Dallas weddings, notable events and recently for the Dallas Margarita Society. Cakes like these are not readily available anywhere else in Dallas. When asked about how she can make such elaborate cakes so easily available to her customers, Soonja explains “Many bakeries treat custom sculpture orders as an unusual request. These kinds of cakes are just what I do, my specialty. I can do a lot of them in a week because I have talented people to help me. My assistant, Rafael Coria, is someone I can always count on”. Soonja has created designs ranging from techie, trendy or realistic; an I-Phone, Angry Birds, even a Shiner beer bottle and larger than life Patron tequila bottle. Her motto: “If you can dream it, we can create it”.

When asked about her favorite part of being a cake artist, Soonja replies with genuine appreciation, “I really love going on deliveries and seeing the excitement and happiness that my work brings to people’s special celebrations”.
