Working with Mark Connors as his publicist and personal manager has guaranteed I’ll often be surprised. I was just leaving my local Rotary Club meeting when my cell phone turned all heads in my direction. It was Mark who said he had someone he’d like me to speak with.
A voice came on the line and said, “Hello, this is Dierks Bentley.” Now, I’m not too swift at these early morning meetings, so I came back with, Who?” “Dierks Bentley, I’m a country singer,” he replied. Well, of course he is! Sheepishly, I said, “I know who you are….I just thought I wasn’t hearing correctly.” After a few pleasantries, he handed the phone back to Mark who was pleased to have pulled this one off because he knows I’m a huge Dierks Bentley fan.
Mark said he’d stopped into Country Boy Restaurant in Liepers Fork, Tennessee for breakfast that morning. Country Boy is a hang-out for the local country musicians, and he ran into Dierks who invited him over to meet a couple of his buddies. That’ll teach him….he got to start his day with a tongue-tied lady on the phone who had the gall to ask him who he is.
About that time, a camera crew arrived and Dierks said, “I’m out of here.” As it happened, Wynnona and Naomi Judd, who often frequent Country Boy, were being filmed there that day for a segment of their new reality show which will air on Opra Winfrey’s new network.
Mark had just ordered breakfast, so he watched the crew rearrange the café, prep a waiter to be filmed, and wire everyone for sound. As he waited, he was approached and told that Wynnona Judd wanted to say “Hi” to him when she came in the door…would he sign a waiver to be filmed. Would he! So when the film began to roll, Mark stood up to greet Wynnona and gave her a hug. According to Mark, her greeting was, “Don’t mess up my hair.”
Mark stuck around to watch the rest of the filming and we’ll be watching to see if his mug hits national TV or if he ends up on the cutting room floor. Either way, it was quite a morning.
This is just a snippet of what my world is like since I gave Mark Connors the nod and came on board to work with him. There’s never a dull moment.
