A Retrospective Exhibition of Bikash Bhattacharjee

Depicting the aspirations, penetrating to the psychological undercurrents of the people of his time made Bikash Bhattacharjee one of the most relevent and powerfull artist. He has shown his mastery over all possible mediums like oil, water color, gouche, pastel and even in traditional methods of print making. Emami Chisel Art Pvt Ltd takes pride in celebrating the artist’s 69th birthday which was on the 21st June in the form of a Retrospective Exhibition. The exposition will show 69 works by the artist in all the mediums he had worked on. This Exhibition will be inaugurated by yet another celebrated artist Shri Ganesh Haloi at Emami Chisel Art Pvt Ltd, Emami Towers 687 Anandapur E.M. Bypass, Kolkata 700 107 W.B. India on 17th August 2009 at 6 pm. Emami Chisel Art is also happy to announce that this exhibition will travel to Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi from 6th October to 5th November 2009. An illustrated catalogue will also be published on the occasion.

Born in Kolkata, Bikash Bhattacharjee graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship. Bikash Bhttacharjee began teaching at Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship from 1968 to 1972. Later from 1973, Bhattacharjee began teaching at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata and taught there till 1982. In 1964, he became a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists.

The significant turn in his painting career came with the ‘Doll’ Series in 1960, which was later followed by the Durga Series. In the 1980s, Bikash painted illustrations for a sequel novel on the life of another great artist of the past- Ramkinker Baij . The novel written by Bengali novelist Samaresh Basu could not be completed as Basu died in between, but those works of Bikash’s have remained as some of his best.

His ability to create an authentic milieu as a background to the characters heightens the drama which will once again come to life with such an extensive showcasing of the artist and his being. This exhibition can be viewed online at www.emamichisel.com
