Some orders of clergy, actually wear the rosary as a part of their “habit” or daily garb but most lay people find wearing a rosary as part of their clothing somewhat over the top. Therefore, the popularity of rosary bracelets has grown, along with men’s rosary bracelets, as more and more among the faithful wear them to either have instant access to saying the rosary or simply to declare their faith.

In the Catholic faith, the rosary is a set of prayers consisting of five or ten or more “Our Fathers” ( the Lord’s Prayer) each of which is followed by a set of ten Hail Mary’s. In praying the rosary on a rosary bracelet, the ten beads are usually there only once and they represent the ten sets of ten beads most commonly found on an actual rosary. Pope Leo XIII even became known as "The Rosary Pope” due to his dedication to the Mother of Jesus and the praying of The Rosary .

Today a rosary bracelet may have more valuable or colorful beads than a standard rosary or a silver or bronze cross attached to it, but in general use a rosary bracelet appears to be a modified version of the rosary itself. The rosary bracelet is considered a more serious declaration of faith than most other religious jewelry items.

Modifications to the praying of the Rosary have come about due to the Virgin Mary’s various appearances to children as has happened numerous times over now many, many decades. Her appearance to the three Fatima children in 1917 on the 13th day of six consecutive months was accompanied by numerous revelations. Some of these were about the forthcoming world wars and the affects communism would have on the Catholic population and even the eventual demise of much of the influence of Communism.


More than a few Saints and many popes besides Pope Leo XIII have praised and advocated the meditative elements of the praying of the rosary. The Fatima children described Mary as wearing a beautiful Rosary, made of pearls, in their telling of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin and following which, pearl rosary bracelets, or rosary bracelets with a single pearl as the final bead have gained popularity.

Like the Rosary itself, Rosary bracelets tend to be a rather serious statement of religious faith, as noted above, So rosary bracelets, therefore, are not commonly worn so much as decoration, or even declaration, as a cross might be worn; but are most often worn as a functioning, utilitarian item which assists the wearer in concentrating on his or her prayers. This fact alone makes rosary bracelets stand apart from other Catholic religious jewelry.

Some Rosary bracelets, however, are more decorative, even using crystal beads as separation between the decades or, as mentioned, Pearls. Men’s Rosary bracelets are more commonly plain, perhaps sandalwood or olivewood beads on leather or elastic chord.
