Author Thomas O’Hare announced today the release of Galway Romance, A Holiday Romance, published by Outskirts Press. O’Hare’s charming reminiscence of an eighteen day tryst with a young Irish lass in 1961 mixes the refreshing emotions of new love with the backdrop of a nervous world teetering back and forth under the threat of nuclear war.
In 1961 the Soviet Union and the United States were locked in a frigid global face off. The Berlin wall had just gone up and the Bay of Pigs crisis was in full swing. The Viet Nam conflict was in its initial stages. Young Americans stationed as soldiers in Germany felt the increasing tension from the cold war. Not even Elvis Presley, himself an Army Sergeant, could escape the looming dangers of a world with nuclear weapons.
Eighteen days of escape on the Emerald Isle seemed a precious sanctuary to the author as he embarked on his flight from Frankfurt to Dublin and began his leave from the spit and polish rigors of the army and the anxious atmosphere of a nervous Europe.
When he reached Galway Bay and walked into the Sea Point Ballroom to share a dance, he received a gift he had never imagined. He and lovely young Mary O’Grady wrapped their arms around each other for their first dance and began an eighteen day romantic idyll on the green land and cool waters of the old sod.
Mary was a commercial artist and a beautiful and independent young woman and she and the author shared adventures every day and evening as they embraced all that life had to offer them in those short eighteen days. It was a far cry from the Brooklyn that O’Hare had come from, but as he reminisces, he recognizes that the three hundred year old Dutch farmhouse he grew up in shared an antiquity with many of the houses in Galway and he remembers the many other Irish Mary’s who were his family and friends near Flatbush Avenue and who shared the name of his newly beloved.
Galway Romance is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.

About the author:
Thomas O’Hare grew up surrounded by history and interesting people. He was born in a 300 year old Dutch farmhouse where George Washington may have slept during the Battle of Long Island, and he shared high school Science and English classes at Erasmus Hall High with Barbra Streisand. Always a rebel, the former Lord of Flatbush, O’Hare left school to join the Army and he was stationed close to Elvis Presley and also his friend Hugh Murphy. Galway Romance is inspired by the memories of those happy and traumatic days.
