A semi-truck driver was killed Friday in a collision in northeast Oklahoma City that led to the closure of northbound lanes of Interstate 35.
The driver of a tanker truck was headed south on the interstate when his vehicle crossed the center median and collided with a northbound semi.
The northbound truck hit a large overhead sign pole, severing the engine from the truck's cab.
"It looks like the pole peeled that trailer back like a tuna can," Randolph said. "Everything in the cab and the trailer is on the shoulder or on the roadway."
The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. south of the busy I-35-Interstate 44 interchange
The northbound truck's driver died at the scene, The other truck overturned, but the driver managed to crawl out and was transported to a hospital for treatment, she said.
Two sets of identification were found in the debris from the northbound truck, so investigators are trying to determine if another victim is in the wreckage.
Motorists were diverted off the highway south of the accident site, but Randolph said traffic was backed up for miles.
Two northbound lanes reopened about 6 p.m., but one lane and the off-ramps near the crash site remained closed.
"We realize this is an inconvenience, but someone lost their life and we want to make sure we find out what happened and make sure the road is safe before we reopen it," Randolph said.
