Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) September 2, 2010 --

If you are renting in an Atlanta community that does not include central air conditioning, and window type A/C units is prohibited, portable air conditioning is safe, cost efficient and is usually an item that will be accepted in apartment or condominium communities. Even if you have central air conditioning in your apartment, purchasing a portable A/C system to cool off a single room, like the bedroom before you go to sleep or keeping the study a bit cooler while you read, will save you money. Let’s face it, cooling down one room instead of turning down the A/C thermostat to cool off the entire apartment will keep the monthly electric bill from heating up your mailbox!

Atlanta single-family homeowners who have invested in minimum expansions like an extra bedroom or den and have not increased the central air conditioner capacity to meet the demands of the increased square footage, portable A/C systems fit in nicely. On very warm Atlanta days these additional spaces may have a hard time cooling off; turning down the A/C thermostat will chill the rest of the home while barely increasing the comfort in these other rooms. Using a portable A/C system in this capacity can be a very cost effective way to help cool these extra spaces.

Before you run off and purchase one, careful consideration to room size and system efficiency is important. Purchasing too small or large a portable A/C system becomes less than cost effective if it does not match the room size correctly. The most important value to look for when purchasing a portable A/C unit is the BTU rating. This rating is used in both heating and air conditioning systems and refers to how much energy it takes to heat up a room or take hot air out, respectively.

An 8,000BTU portable A/C system will cool roughly up to a 200 square foot room, while a 14,000 BTU system can handle up to 400sf of space. Other things to consider is how the system vents hot moist air or drains water from the condenser. More expensive units come with a hose that is placed in an open window allowing hot, moist air to escape outside. Less expensive models require the user to periodically drain water from the system. In addition, some larger, but still portable A/C models have heating and dehumidifying capabilities; some of these units are 100 pounds, however!
