A study into the ways in which people are drawn into addiction to food and how these people could be controlled is being undertaken by researchers at the University of Houston. In lieu of the use of conventional methodology, these researchers are instead moving things up a notch by their application of an innovative approach, with the use of virtual reality.
The director of the UH Graduate college of Social Work, Prof. Patrick Bornick, and the assistant professor of health and human performance, Tracey Ledoux, has collaborated in order to form a virtual environment test lab. In this laboratory, the addictive tendencies and food phobias of participants are to be invoked by first stimulating their cravings for food. The outcome of this would be a very financially cheap study which could be used for the provision of effective results and monitored output.
The people who were chosen to partake in this study are women, they were selected based on factors such as their normal weigh and if they have any stated dietary limitations in addition to weather or nor these women were attempting to lose weight. The woman had to put on a virtual reality helmet prior to going into the virtual world, an environment that has been simulated specifically to resemble an actual restaurant, this simulation also simulates sounds, smells and sights of actual restaurants. The women who enter this virtual world will have the ability to converse and socialise with waiters and other restaurant staff, they will also posses the ability to move towards a buffet.
With the aforementioned set up, the researchers would possess the ability to identify the types of food that caused cravings in the study participants. Over indulgence in food is as a direct result of cravings, this eventually leads to obesity and the failure to lose weight. Upon the determination of the foods that cause cravings, researchers would have the means to perform more research on the implementation and creation of effective obesity treatment procedures. In addition, the researchers would make use of the aforementioned research as a case study for other similar problems; this case study could be used to obtain additional factors that relate to addiction to food and over indulgence in food. They were firmly convinced that by the successful identification of the main factors that play a part in obesity, they would then have an increased likelihood of stopping the ever rising obesity trends.
