A Team Services Reminds Us That It's Time To Perform Spring Maintenance On Air Conditioning Systems

At A-Team Services we believe the MOST important thing you can do to prolong the life of your HVAC equipment is to change your filter! The SECOND most important thing a homeowner can do is to perform Regular Maintenance on your heating and air conditioning systems.

It's very important to service your air conditioning system in the spring and heating system in the fall to stay comfortable all year long! Of course, spring is rapidly approaching in the Atlanta area and summer will be upon us soon.

Complicated equipment like today's air conditioning systems benefit in many ways from annual service:

They recover much of their lost efficiency
They are less likely to suffer a major break down
They have a longer life span
They increase your comfort
They operate for less money

We all know we can pay auto mechanics a little now for routine service, or pay them a great deal more later for a major repair. The same truth holds for your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump. At A Team Services, we know, if you don't service your air conditioning system, furnace or heat pump regularly, you'll find yourself uncomfortable physically and fiscally.

Both air conditioning condensing units and heat pumps benefit greatly from annual service tune-ups. An air conditioner is a rugged piece of equipment. It is engineered to withstand all types of abuse and keep on running. This is great in most respects, but it can lead to complacency about maintenance. Like a car, your air conditioning system needs regular tune-ups to run properly.

Without regular maintenance, an air conditioning system loses about 5% of it's original efficiency for each year of operation. This means that the 12 SEER unit that you bought just a few years ago may be operating like a 9 SEER unit today!

The good news is that you can recover most of that lost efficiency through proper maintenance. Studies show that with regular tune-ups a central ac system will maintain up to 95% of it's original efficiency. This means that the cost of an annual tune-up is recovered very quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs.

A correctly serviced air conditioning system will also do a better job of dehumidifying your home.

Our Tune-up includes; cleaning the condensing unit coils with water, checking the amp draw of the compressor, oiling the fan motors, checking to make sure that belts are well adjusted, and checking the system operating pressures and temperatures against the manufacturers specifications. One of the most important items to check is the coolant level (commonly know as Freon) in the air conditioning system. A system that is only 10% low on coolant will cost about 20% more to operate!

The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) recommends that freon levels be checked every year. If your air conditioning system is low on freon, and more must be added, there are new laws governing its use. Freon is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) that will damage the Earth's protective ozone layer if released into the atmosphere. New laws governing CFC's do not allow us to add Freon to a leaky system more than once. We at A-Team Services and all central ac systems suppliers and repair services, are required to find and fix the leak in the system.

In addition to yearly heating and air conditioning tune-ups there are some things that you can do to help ensure a high level of comfort and proper system operation:

Buy good filters and change them regularly
Keep bushes and other materials away from the outside unit of your air conditioner
Avoid closing air supply outlets in your house. In almost all cases, closing supply outlets is harmful to the operation of the overall system
Routing Maintenance
Duct cleaning
