A Third Of British Men Refuse To Tell Their Partners Their Expenses On Playing Online Games

15 July 2009 – One third of British men who play online games such as bingo and poker don’t tell their partners how much they really spend on them, according to a new survey from comparison site BingoHideout.co.uk

The survey, which questioned over 2,000 people across the UK, found that nearly half of the male respondents spend up to £50 per week playing online games, while more than 1 in 10 spend up to £100 per week – but many tell their partners they spend far less than they really do.

With nearly 1 in 5 online bingo players now male, the survey found that over 42% of men play at least a couple of times a week, while one third of them play every day.

Director of Bingo Hideout, Ben Thorns, says: “The popularity of online bingo among men has risen massively over the last couple of years, and it is now starting to catch up with poker. While bingo was once seen as attracting a largely female audience, the choice and low cost of games is attracting many more men – with nearly 25% of players now male.

“The survey was a fun way of finding out about attitudes towards online games such as bingo, but the fact that so many men seem to dodge the subject of what they really spend surprised us all. While the majority are truthful, a third seem to feel embarrassed or nervous about sharing details of their expenditure, even with those closest to them.”

53% of men also said that they regularly use the chat rooms on the gaming sites, with nearly a third having made new friends through them. Nearly one in 12 also said they had found love or a long lost friend through the chat rooms, highlighting the social aspect of the latest gaming websites.

1 in 6 men also said that playing online bingo and using the chat rooms has helped bring improvements to their lives. Making new friends, increasing confidence, and help with computer skills were all highlighted as benefits from using the gaming websites.
