“When you hear giggling coming from the aisles, you know where the customer is. They’re standing at the SweeTea display, pointing and laughing,” confirms Lorrie Riccitello. Riccitello owns Meadows of Dan Trading Company in Mount Airy, NC where she carries the SweeTea, a Southern brand of t-shirts. The laughter generally follows with pulling out their wallets to buy, says Riccitello. And it’s those loyal customers who buy that have made SweeTea one of the fastest growing branded t-shirt companies in the South. The southern twist helps them stand out from the rest. Bless yer Heart, Don’t Get Me Started, You Ain’t right, and Ah’m Fixin’ ta are some of the top sellers. The quality of the shirt also brings fans back. Over the five years SweeTea has been in business, hundreds of sayings have emblazoned the bodies of SweeTea fans across America. Naturally, most are Southern people but the company now is seeing expansion into the Northern and Western states. Apparently, SweeTea now has no boundaries.

Sold in over twenty-five states and in hundreds of retail stores across America, surprisingly enough, owners Karen Hall and Susan Bashford are not Southern. These relocated Yankees actually married Southern boys who often left them in a tizzy trying to understand their conversation. That’s when the light bulb went off. “We called our husbands and said, ‘Start talking’,” Hall said. There certainly is no shortage of funny things people say. This duo gets suggestions daily on their website www.sweeteashirts.com. “We love the personal feel we get with SweeTea. Our customers are helping to mold our business and preserve our Southern heritage for generations to come,” said Bashford. And this duo is achieving that, one t-shirt at a time. Their business continues to grow in a cautious economy. “I think our shirts give people something to smile about when the news of the day isn’t always so uplifting,” Bashford adds.

Both entrepreneurs left the corporate world to live a dream - a dream that has brought family members and friends together to lend a hand. Leaving the stress behind, they now spend most of the day laughing hysterically at the new saying of the day as it is folded, tagged and packed for shipment to some cute main street store in the good ‘ole Southern USA.
