A unique way to treat the canvass

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 23, 2010 -- An artist’s canvass has always been a silent spectator to the innumerable stories drawn upon it. Throughout the history of art, canvass has remained entirely in the background, like a supporting cast, indifferent to the stories being created upon it. The thought of experimenting with the canvass or bringing it in the foreground never bothered the artists. But, that seems to change with the unconventional methods of young artists.

Boshudhara Mukerjee has given a new dimension to her canvass by making it an active participant in the process of creation. Her desire to free the canvass, to be able to manoeuver and manipulate it, is beautifully manifested though ‘Painted Veil’- her inaugural solo exhibition. It is surprising to find her canvass hanging through the roof instead of being frozen in framework. Her technique allows her canvass to breathe a life of its own, with freedom to be swayed and move in the air.

Painted Veil is a unique concept involving meticulous weaving of long strips of painted canvass. Boshodhara’s artworks are a product of severe destruction, which might give a shock initially. She cuts her paintings in long and narrow strips and weaves them together to create wide veils of multilayered interwoven strips, resulting in an unexpected pattern of their own. The outcome is a wonderful mix of different parts of the original painting, in which the process of destruction is completely lost without a trace, though the essence of the original work remains.

Neither a painting, nor a sculpture, her work hangs in a league of its own. “I wanted my canvass to be an important part of my work,” says the young artist. “And bringing it out from the framework provides an opportunity to display it from both the sides. Its front is the manifestation of our consciousness, while back represents the semi-conscious wandering of thoughts,” she explained. Her work dives deep into the philosophy of life. It is a clear portrayal of formation after destruction with different layers marking the ups and downs in life. But, these are joined together, loosely at times, still, preventing the life from falling apart.

Though, created frontally, the work can be viewed from all the sides, providing a great scope for multiple interpretations. And, one of her main objective is to question the viewer’s notion about painting and art, which she successfully achieves by creating multiple points of views. And, for once, the artist’s canvass is out in the open to play a bigger role in the creation.
