The man, in his 70s, was headed up High Street around 8 a.m. when his car was smashed by a Miele garbage truck traveling on Knickerbocker Road, a source with direct knowledge of the accident.
The driver was killed, and emergency responders couldn't get to him because a gas valve was struck by the careening car.
The first responding units were held off by the threat of exploding gas, an emergency worker.
The traffic signal at that intersection has been out since the weekend snowstorm. Makeshift STOP signs were erected, but it was dark at the time.
As of 9:30 a.m., the Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Accident Unit was still at the scene investigating.
