Summary

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have been established in many countries as testing grounds for the implementation of liberal market economy. These are also viewed as instruments to enhance the acceptability and the credibility of the transformation policies, to attract domestic and foreign investment and also for the opening up of the economy. Today, there are more than 3,000 SEZs in 120 countries and they account for over USD 600 billion in exports and 50 million direct jobs.

Apart from providing state-of-the-art infrastructure and access to a large well-trained and skilled work force, the SEZ also provides enterprises and developers with a favorable and attractive framework of incentives.
As on June 30, 2010 the total numbers of operational SEZs are 114. A total of 105 SEZs are already exporting. Total exports of USD 49.05 billion have been made from SEZs during the financial year 2009-10. This has registered a 121.40% growth from 2008-09.
