FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Phoenix, Arizona, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 14, 2012 -- Built by the Glenn L. Martin Company, the B-26 Marauder was a twin-engine bomber that began flying combat missions in the Pacific in 1942, and was later assigned to Europe and the Mediterranean. It earned the reputation Widowmaker because early models were prone to take off and landing accidents.

Primarily used by the United States Army Air Forces or USAAF, United States Army Air Corps or USAAC, Royal Air Force or RAF, and South African Air Force or SAAF (522 Marauders for these last two), the B-26 became a safer plane when crews were re-trained and aerodynamics were modified. After vital improvements, the USAAF dispatch from 1946 regarded the Marauder B-26 as “the chief bombardment weapon on the Western Front.” It ended the 2nd World War with the lowest USAAF bomber loss rate.

The B-26 was fitted with two Pratt & Whitney R-800 engines. It had a maximum speed of 285 mph and a cruising speed of 190 mph. It was armed with eleven .50-cal machine guns and up to 4,000 lbs. of bombs. It had a range of 1,100 miles. The B-26 aircraft had a span of 71 feet, a height of 20 feet and 3 inches, and a length of 58 feet and 6 inches.

One Marauder aircraft costs more than $100,000 to build and a total of 5,288 were built in 1941-1945. It was developed into the XB-33 Super Marauder. It is said that many variants of the Marauder are still used in Canada for forest fire control.
