Academic Software a Match to Commercial Editions: No Way!
Academic Software a Match to Commercial Editions: No Way!
While high-end consumerism boosts economic commercialization, it is also the apotheosis of the popular ‘profits-over-anything’ trend.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 1, 2012 --
February 01, 2012 - Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, Corel…the clamor for the world’s leading consumer brands is apparently getting louder and stronger. Buying an Adobe Creative Suite for example takes only a few clicks on one of the many so-called ‘low-sell’ websites shouting out ‘guaranteed software at best prices’.
While some websites (and the numbers are merely marginal) do offer what they promise, others are solely devoted towards raking in profits, whether the means justify the ends, or not.
Educational software may turn a spitting image of the retail production, but in fact, they have massive license limitations. Still, many sellers quite deliberately make claims like:
"Educational Software from Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, Symantec, Corel, Autodesk1, Avid, Pinnacle, and many other major software manufacturers has the exact same features and functionality as the Full-Price, Full-Version Commercial, Consumer, and Retail versions of the software."
What however goes missing is a suchlike postscript disclaimer:
"Educational Software is not licensed for use for commercial or business purposes."
Although educational software is packaged to look more or less like retail, an underlying difference separates the two.
Education versions aren’t qualified for upgrades and are STRICTLY meant for training purposes. In fact, every maker that offers student discounts is covered by a right to indictment.
A case in point is Adobe, which considers going commercial on the ‘EDU’ version as an indictment. A misuse of the license grants legal rights to the company to file a suit against the licensee. Even Microsoft, or for that matter Apple, can come after the licensee by pressing their legal rights.
While this ensures that the rights of the software companies are protected, unaware consumers are hit hard by false claims made by sellers. It is the maker’s prerogative to combat and nip this misleading trend by making the educational version of their software functionally synonymous to the retail version.
Of course, certain functionalities that students may not need could be given a miss. Functionality therefore is another area where commercial software are most likely to stand out from academic versions.
