The Welsh Poetry Competition 2010 organisers announced the winners of the competition at a prize giving evening in Clwb-Y-Bont, Pontypridd this week.
The winner of the 2010 competition was acclaimed crime and mystery thriller writer Sally Spedding. Born in Porthcawl and a trained sculptress her novels and short stories have won numerous awards and been widely published.
John Evans wrote of Sally Spedding’s winning poem, Litzmannstadt 1941: “Excellently written. A narrative poem whose shifts and turns propel the reader through an episode in one of humankind’s darkest eras. Lyrical, emotional, inventive, and bursting with imagery.”
The competition winners were as follows:
1st Prize – Litzmannstadt 1941 by Sally Spedding
2nd Prize – Izzy by Nigel Ormond
3rd Prize – Waiting by Jane Fox
John also choose another seventeen poems for the ‘specially commended’ section as well as a one-off prize for 13 year old Jeno Davies. All winning poems can be viewed on the competition website – www.welshpoetry.co.uk
The winners and other entrants gathered at a prize giving event in Pontypridd to each receive certificates and the first three winners were also presented with their prize winning cheques.
Now in its 4th year the international competition has once again discovered some amazing new talent. This year saw more entries than ever all of which were read by our judge John Evans.
The aim of the competition has always been to encourage and reward the wealth of creative writing talent that exists in Wales but that often gets overlooked by the arts establishment.
Dave Lewis, competition organizer said: “The overall standard was once again excellent. We had our most entries ever this year. Overseas entries were also up with poets entering from France, Belgium, USA and Australia to name just a few places. Each year the competition continues to grow and after next years’ winners we will be looking into publishing an anthology of the best entries”
“Having Welsh writer and activist, John Evans, as judge for this year’s competition has obviously helped us attract more poets who might have otherwise been put off by more traditional competitions.
