Superbugs are infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria which can be dreadful and is stated to be very much in the news these days. This type of infection is spreading at an alarming rate which can be life-threatening as well. For instance methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of staph which is increasingly becoming resistant to broad spectrum antibiotics. These can cause anything from bloodsteam infection, pneumonia, painful boils, swells and even lethal surgical wound infections. In fact, antibiotics and other scientific formulations have run out to treat these potentially deadly health woes.
However, a natural way to fight these infections has been around for over centuries. It is the manuka honey which is natural nectar extracted from the manuka bushes majorly found in New Zealand. A report in the recent times again depicted the remarkable disease fighting abilities of the nectar. The society for General Microbiology held a meeting at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Rowena Jenkins and her investigative team from the University of Wales institute in United Kingdom presented results of their study showing that the manuka honey can wipe out superbugs by destroying key bacterial proteins.
"Manuka and other honeys have been known to have wound healing and anti-bacterial properties for some time," said Dr Jenkins to the media. "But the way in which they act is still not known. If we can discover exactly how manuka honey inhibits MRSA it could be used more frequently as a first-line treatment for infections with bacteria that are resistant to many currently available antibiotics."
In fact, the team in their latest research grew MRSA in their laboratory and treated it with or without manuka honey for several hours. They even conducted the same procedure using honey sugar syrup to ensure whether any superbug effects were seen due to the sugar content in honey alone. The results were not due to the sugars in the honey.
