In a territory that has not had a ruling national government for 18 years; Islamists in southern Somalia have stoned a man to death for adultery. His pregnant girlfriend was spared until she has given birth.
In the port town of Merka, Abas Hussein Abdirahman, 33, was murdered in front of a crowd of roughly 300 people. This is the third time Islamists have stoned a person to death for adultery in the past twelve months.
A representative from the al-Shabab group said the woman would be killed after she has had her baby. The child will be handed over to relatives to rear.
The UN-backed government only controls parts of the capital; while Islamist groups run much of southern Somalia.
Al-Shabab official, Sheikh Suldan Aala Mohamed, stated Mr Abdirahman had confessed to adultery before an Islamic court.
In the meantime, al-Shabab has been accused by President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of spoiling the image of Islam by killing people and harassing women.
During a ceremony at which he nominated a new administration for the capital, Mogadishu, the moderate Islamist alleged "Their actions have nothing to do with Islam. They are forcing women to wear very heavy clothes, saying they want them to properly cover their bodies but we know they have economic interests behind - they sell these kinds of clothes and want to force people to buy them."
Last month, two men were stoned to death in the same town after being charged with spying.
In the southern town of Kismayo, a 13-year-old girl was stoned to death for adultery last year. Human rights groups affirm she had been raped.
In the Lower Shabelle region another man has also been penalized in this way.
Mr Sharif, a former rebel leader, was sworn in as president after UN-brokered peace talks in January.
Though he reveals he also wants to implement Sharia, al-Shabab says his version of Islamic law would be too lenient.
The pirates of Somalia, since the early 1990's have been a hazard to international shipping. Over US$150 million have received by Somali pirates during the 12 months prior to November 2008 according to Kenyan foreign minister.
