On the way to the cloudforest, after which the Chachapoyas were named, travelers will tour the Tucume Pyramids and Sipan ruins. Tucume, which includes 26 pyramids and platforms on its 540 acres, was an important hub for the Sican, Chimu and finally the Inca. The world-famous Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum houses the Lord of Sipan tomb, which has been compared to Egypt’s Tomb of Tutankhamun in terms of importance.

To reach the ruins of Revash, travelers will ride horses up steep cliffs. Revash consists of a group of tombs that bear their original coat of red and white pigment – the mineral-oxide paintwork remains bright today. Leimebamba, a settlement established by the Incas, contains 200 preserved mummies. Here, cliff tombs were discovered high in the mountains as recently as 1997, and artifacts from those tombs are displayed at the Leimebamba Museum.

Travelers will take a full day at Kuelap, the location of an enormous, 2,000-foot-long platform along a ridgetop. Above the platform, structures of varying styles and sizes create an intricate maze. Kuelap, with walls 62 feet high, was a religious and ceremonial site. Kuelap’s remoteness ensures only a handful of visitors at any given time.

At the end of the trip, travelers may choose to hike to the third tallest free-falling waterfall, the Gocta, which was not known to the world until 2006. The local people feared the falls and the legendary siren, a dangerous enchantress who lived in the falls. The other optional excursion goes to Karajia. Visitors can view the inaccessible cave where the Chachapoyan erected nine clay figures to hold the bodies of their chieftains and perhaps their families. The clay figures, some almost 10 feet tall, have angular, stylized faces and are covered in brightly painted designs.
