Baltimore, MD, January 25, 2012 — Some people age well, with attractive gray hair and laugh lines. Others aren’t as lucky, aging faster than they feel. Sometimes it’s genetics; sometimes it’s stress. If this speaks to you, then you have the option of having a facelift, which can take years off your appearance and help you regain the confidence to approach every day with a spring in your step ... as long as the facelift gives you the results you were expecting.
The first step to a successful facelift is choosing a plastic surgeon. Qualifications and experience matter, as do personality and aesthetic. Find a surgeon who listens to what you want and can offer learned suggestions about how to get there. Next, consider the range of procedures available; you may only need a little help. Doing too much is where bad facelifts originate.
A full facelift is no longer the only option to achieve a more youthful appearance. A neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid lift can smooth out excess skin in the area that most concerns you. A mini-facelift (also called a MACS face lift) can add a firmer appearance to the lower part of your face and tighten up fleshy cheeks.
A neck lift focuses on the loose skin under your chin. The plastic surgeon makes a small incision to remove fat and tighten the muscles. A necklift can also remove the visible vertical bands in your neck. After this procedure, your chin will appear more prominent and your entire face will look younger and firmer.
A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, can virtually eliminate the deep creases that form across your forehead and at the top of your nose. This procedure can also correct drooping eyebrows. You may consider a brow lift in combination with another procedure, depending on your cosmetic needs.
As you age, collagen and elastin production slows in the skin around your eyes. This causes your skin to pull away from the underlying muscle, creating wrinkles and sagging skin. You may notice changes around your eyes such as “crow’s feet,” wrinkles underneath your eyes, or drooping eyelids. An eyelid lift (or blepharoplasty) can smooth out those wrinkles and give your eyes a more open look. You can opt for an upper eyelid lift, a lower eyelid lift, or both.
