Renaissance eServices Pvt. Ltd has been working under the guidance of engineers of IIT Rajasthan and a Korean Design company to get a functional tablet for the masses in India & the world on the lines of the now heavily criticized "Aakash" tablet. This endeavour is supported by Asia - Pacific's largest silicon distributor.
The company is now ready with its tablet "Akshar" with a recommended retail price of INR 3250 (US$ 65). The tablet is undergoing rigorous testing to meet the much publicized "military level' specifications of IIT Rajasthan. To ensure robust built quality, the tablets will be manufactured at the foundry of one of the world's largest electronic manufacturer. "Akshar" is a sanskrit word meaning 'Unalterable' .An alternative translation would be "letter" - in alignment with the educational objectives of the company.
Akshar would be launched by end of February / first week of March 2012. The broad specifications of the tablet are:
Processor: 800 Mhz
RAM: 512
Internal space: 4GB
Speakers: built-in
Mic: Built-in
Camera: Built
Supports wi-fi - Yes
Screen: Touch
OS: Android 2.3
Warranty: 1 year replacement warranty for manufacturing defects
The company plans to sell & distribute the Akshar tablet in the open market unlike Aakash which was to be distributed through the government machinery. It has already received orders for over 100,000 tablets from educational institutes. It has also signed a MOU with Zane Education for distributing the tablet for the international markets and is talks with other value added services provider to bundle their content/service with the tablet.
The company also aims to bring out a SIM card enabled tablet in association with its partners by April 2012.
