Muscat - Al Raffah Hospital, under the management of Dr. Moopens Group is pro-active in its campaign to provide greater awareness of cardiovascular illness. “The saying, ‘prevention is better than cure’ always makes sense and this what we are echoing to everyone”, said Ms. Asma Khan, Manager - Corporate Relations of Al Raffah Hospital.
Living its commitment to care for people, Al Raffah Hospital encourages individuals from all walks of life to heed the early symptoms of a heart attack.
“Many people are still not fully aware of the classic symptoms of a potential heart attack until it hit them”, said Dr. Shaju Padman, a Cardiologist at the Al Raffah Hospital, who has 18 years experience in Cardiac Resuscitation and Advance Cardiac Life Support.
According to the World Health Organisation, heart disease is the number one killer worldwide claiming 17 million lives every year. A report published by the American Health Association cites that nearly 460,000 women die of Cardiovascular disease every year. Women are more likely having less symptoms of heart disease and ignoring warning signs of a heart attack.
Chest pain or pressure, oftentimes associated with shortness of breath, jaw pain, dizziness, sweatiness and sometimes even nausea and vomiting are classic symptoms of a heart attack. These symptoms widely vary from one person to the other. Heart attack may start with a chest pain, then it will radiate up to the neck or out into the arms.
“A heart attack happens when blood flow to a section of heart muscle is blocked and when there’s lack of oxygen. Ultimately, it leads to death.” Dr. Shaju said.
Statistics shows that about 15 per cent of heart attacks are so called “silent” and most people don’t have symptoms or do not recognize the symptoms, thus fail to seek medical attention.
Smoking, obesity and high cholesterol are the most common culprits of a heart disease. However, research also shows that stress and depression boost the risks of heart attacks and strokes.
A recent finding revealed that people with bad teeth, bleeding gums and poor dental hygiene can end up causing heart disease and increase the risk of having a heart attack according to Microbiologists from the University of Bristol and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
To prevent the danger of having a heart attack, a simple blood test and stress test can warn everyone. A stress test is a way of evaluating how the heart performs under stress, which is done by walking in a treadmill. For people who cannot do exercise, a pharmacological stress is conducted, which makes the heart beat faster and harder and to see how a heart performs.
Al Raffah Hospital Cardiology department provides these tests, giving emphasis on risk factors, evaluation of lifestyle, and early detection and management of cardiovascular disease, detailed evaluation and management of common cardiovascular and related disorders like Hypertension (Blood Pressure), Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Cardio Artery Disease.
