SAN DIEGO, CA — The Empowering Spirits Foundation (ESF), a national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, is partnering with Birmingham Habitat for Humanity and MyOutSpirit.com for “Raise the Walls” to take place October 10th in Birmingham, Alabama.
“Raise the Walls” is designed to allow LGBT individuals to work side-by-side with non-LGBT members of the Birmingham community in an effort to open up communication between both sides. The Birmingham event is part of the ESF’s national “Proud Hearts Reach Out” events, and MyOutSpirit.com’s “Come Out Spiritually” theme to be held October 10th-11th in conjunction with Coming Out Day in cities nationwide.
“ESF is proud to be working with Birmingham Habitat and MyOutSpirit.com to address a major issue facing Americans today; affordable housing,” said A. Latham Staples, President and C.E.O. of the ESF. “Regardless of whether you are gay or straight, the lack of affordable housing affects everyone. This is a great opportunity for the LGBT community to help others in need, and in doing so we can engage in dialogue through this non-partisan manner in an effort to promote understanding and equality.”
“Whether you’re Jewish, Christian, or Buddhist, every spiritual tradition requires you to serve the community,” added Clayton Gibson, founder of MyOutSpirit.com, a social networking site for LGBT spiritual individuals. “It’s no different for the LGBT community. We are a part of this community, our families are here. Our well-being and our lives are intertwined with everyone else in the community. And our spirituality demands that when we can help, we do so, while our integrity demands that we aid without hiding who we are.”

About the Empowering Spirits Foundation, Inc.
The ESF is a non-profit, non-partisan grass-root based civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. ESF members engage in service-oriented activities in communities typically opposed to equal rights. In working side-by-side with our non-LGBT neighbors they may come to see similarities rather than differences in each of us, and we can engage in dialogue through non-confrontational means to promote equality.
