1. Dogs have incredibly powerful hearing this is what causes them to panic at the sound of fireworks and thunder their hearing is so good they can register sounds at 35,000 vibrations per sec. and humans can only register at 20,000 vibrations per sec.

2. Greyhounds are the fastest dog and they can reach speeds of up to 45mph, the sport of greyhound racing is very popular in many parts of the world.
3.Dogs have helped man in was for centuries one example was in the second world war Russian troops would strap mines to dogs and send them on suicide missions against German tanks.
4. On a similar vain Mastiffs were used in the middle ages by armies they were fitted with light armour and had pots of burning sulphur attached to use against horsemen.
5. The dog named Laika was sent into orbit around the world by the Russians in 1957. This was one of many space exploration flights for our canine friends.

6. The smallest breeds of dog are the Yorkshire terrier and the Chihahua and the tallest are the Great Dane and the Irish wolfhound.
7. The record for the largest heaviest dog goes to an English Mastiff called Zorba who was an incredible 343lbs. in weight and was 8ft. 3in. from her nose to the end of her tail.
8. Dogs should not eat chocolate because it is poisonous to them, the theobromine (this is similar to caffine) in cocoa can makes dogs seriously ill or it can prove to be even be fatal.
9. The dog’s fantastic sense of smell is used today to find drugs, explosives and buried people. A German shepherd has 220, 000, 000, scent sensory cells whilst mere humans have only 5,000,000.

10. Although most dogs live for about 10 to14 years, the record is 29 years and 5 months.
11. Many people think that dogs are colour blind but in fact this is a myth they can define colours much as we do.
12. The only sweat glands a dog has are between their claws their body temperature is regulated manly by panting and losing the heat through their tongue.
13. Each dog has a different nose print in the same way that all people have individual finger prints.
14. Whilst most dogs can swim effectively, the Newfoundland has webbed feet so is excellent and the Basset Hound cannot swim at all.

15. France and the USA have the largest dog population on the planet with France just behind the USA.
