Before you consider drinking on antibiotics or consuming alcohol while taking any type of antibiotic you should make sure that you understand the repercussions and side effects that are likely to occur because of the interaction between the two. While there are some antibiotics that will have little to no side effects on the person that takes the drugs, there are some that can have life threatening repercussions and side effects. For instance, if you are taking Flagyl, which is an anti-bacterial antibiotic that contains metronidazole, or if you are taking tindazole, which is an antibiotic that contains Tindamax and is used to treat the sexually transmitted disease trichomoniasis among other things, then these medications when they are mixed with alcohol are likely to have more serious side effects. The side effects that you can expect to notice when drinking on antibiotics such as these are drowsiness, dizziness, as well as an upset stomach. The effectiveness of most antibiotics will usually not be altered or hindered when consuming most antibiotics with alcohol, but you should be sure to check to see if you should be consuming them with alcohol before doing so as most medications vary in what you can and cannot take them with. Understanding this is important because along with the previously listed antibiotics and medications there are some that will cause serious side effects. These side effects are likely to include nausea, vomiting, flushing, stomach cramps and headaches. Therefore you can see that drinking on antibiotics without first contacting either a physician or pharmacist is not a good idea when considering the detrimental side effects that may ensue.

Drinking on Antibiotics: Interactions

It is for these reasons that it is important to see if the drug you are taking will have any interactions not only with other medications you are taking, but also whether or not they will have interactions with alcohol as well, this will ensure whether you should be drinking on antibiotics or not. To see what interactions certain medications are capable of producing you can check online or just ask the pharmacist or physician that prescribed you the medication. The medications that are prescribed are also capable of having adverse reactions to the liver if you consume alcohol on a regular basis. For this reason it is important to also let your doctor or physician know that you consume alcoholic beverages on a regular basis so they won’t prescribe you a medication that is likely to heavily damage your liver. With this information the physician will be able to prescribe you the correct medication that will not cause damage to your liver. Taking this step is just as important of being sure as to whether or not you should be drinking on antibiotics with the medications that you are currently taking. Both are just as likely to cause just as much harm to your liver.

Drinking on Antibiotics: What Not To Combine With Alcohol

Along with the medications Flagyl and Tindamax there are also several other medications that may cause severe reactions to combining them with alcohol. These antibiotics include Bactrim, Tinidazole, Furazolidone, Griseofulvin, and Antimalarial Quinacrine. Bactrim, also known as Co-trimoxazole Oral, is an antibiotic that is typically used and prescribed to fight off infections and eliminate bacteria that is likely to cause these infections. Antimalarial Quinacrine, also known as Atabrine, is a medication that has a variety of different uses, the most common of these are for the use of an antiprotozoal and an antimalarial medication. Griseofulvin is a medication that is typically used in the prevention of skin infections like ringworm, jock itch, athlete’s foot, and fungal infections. The fungal infections that Griseofulvin is most commonly used to prevent are fungal infections of the toenails, fingernails and of the scalp. Drinking on antibiotics such as these is likely to cause some of the severe side effects listed above. Furazolidone, also commonly known as Furoxone, is an antibacterial that is commonly used to prevent any further infections that are caused by protozoan or bacteria. Some of the most common ailments that Furoxone is used to treat are diarrhea and enteritis. These are just a few of the many different types of medications that are capable of causing significant harm to those that are not only taking these but to who are also drinking on antibiotics. So it is important to be sure that before combining any antibiotic or medication with alcohol or even with another medication, you check with either a pharmacist or a physician before doing so.
