THE Niger Delta has been impacted by 1.5 million tons of crude oil spill over the last 50 years threatening rare species including primate fish, turtles, bird and damaging crops while destroying the livelihood of many of the 20 million people living there and fuelling the upsurge in violence.
Experts have also listed the Niger Delta among the five most polluted spots on the face of the earth with dire consequences for the health of inhabitants of the area.
This was disclosed by a panel of independent experts who travelled to the increasingly tense and lawless region.
The experts who were representatives of World Wildlife Foundation (WW) UK, the World Conservation Union and representatives from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and the Nigeria Conservation Foundation drew the conclusion in a report they compiled.

5. ANAC ADDRESSED THE WESTERN MEDIA BIAS OF AFRICANS AND NIGERIA IN PARTICULAR Spearheaded by Chief Mrs. Temitope Ajayi, ANAC Trustee at Large House of Delegates
Historically the Western news media focuses on negative news when it comes to news coverage of Africa and its people. Such issues as war, famine, hunger, genocide, natural disaster, disease, fraud and mismanagement remain the sole focus of news coverage of Africa and its people.
What is baffling is that the African community in North America has been content in allowing the western media to define them to the world through these negative news reports. In addition African Embassies and Consulates have failed to take leadership position in challenging some of the false and negative coverage given to Africa and its people.
This approach is about to change thanks to the leadership initiate provided by the All Nigerian American Congress [ANAC]. The recent CNN report titled “How to Rob a Bank” has helped to galvanize the communities of Nigerians living in North America. The report which aired on May 20-21 2006 has added salt to injury on the negative stereotyping of Nigerians.
The Report by Drew Griffin, CNN Anchor interviewed among others, Nigerian convicted criminals as witnesses to support their biased story. Griffin also talked to Mathew Bolden, Federal Agent who helped to try some of the so-called Nigeria.
