History of the SBA
The OSBORNE PARK BALCATTA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION began as one man's idea over 35 years ago.
In July 1973 Colin Beaman, the vocation officer of the Scarborough Rotary Club invited local business people to attend a meeting and from this a steering committee was formed. The inaugural meeting was held in February 1974 with Bernie Ashdown being elected Foundation President of the Association initially named the Osborne Park Business Men’s Association.
Its aim was to improve trade between local businesses and to establish itself as a body which had influence in matters affecting its members. The strength of the Association has shown continuous growth over the intervening years with membership now one of the strongest in Perth.
In 1980 the Association was renamed the Osborne Park Balcatta Business Association and by this change included Balcatta business people and also identified that all business persons were welcome in the Association.
In 1995 the Osborne Park Balcatta Business Association had a name change to the Stirling Business Association to reflect the vast number of businesses throughout Stirling.
The Stirling Business Association is still continuing to set the example for Business Associations in Western Australia and in continually looking to adapt and change for the current business climate, in an effort to meet the changing needs of the members.
The Stirling Business Associations Small Business Awards started in 1995, there is 6 categories: Quality Customer Service Award, Community Spirit Award, Best Home Based Award, Commerce & Industry Award, Best New Business Award & Best Service. All Points Communications first entered the awards in 2010 and we were finalists in Commerce & Industry Award & Best Service Award. In 2011 we entered the awards and were a finalist in the Quality Customer Service Award & were successful in being awarded the Commerce & Industry Award.
It was a very humbling experience but at the same time most gratifying standing on stage in the Ballroom of the Rendezvous Hotel being applauded by your peers. The award application makes you look back on the last 12 months of your business & even further back if you are really trying to improve your business. I would encourage any business to join a business association not just for the awards but for the support & assistance the association & its members will provide you. This is all done with one thing in mind helping you grow you business & putting something back into the community.
