Mainz, Germany - Allison Transmission, the leading global provider of commercial duty automatic transmissions and hybrid propulsion systems, is displaying its innovative transmission technology for airport ground vehicles at October’s inter airport Europe in Munich. International airport operators are increasingly looking to Allison for reliable transmission solutions in their ongoing drive to improve safety and comfort for staff and passengers, increase operational efficiency and ensure the smooth running of air traffic. Allison caters for a wide range of airport ground vehicles, including fuel tankers, airport buses, fire-fighting vehicles, aircraft tractors, toilet service units, de-icer and winter service vehicles.

Improving efficiency and safety on the ground

Allison fully automatic transmissions offer significant advantages to drivers and airport operators. An Allison transmission system allows vehicles to manoeuvre with ease, driving very close to planes without risk of damage. Drivers can keep both hands on the wheel, allowing them to focus completely on driving without becoming distracted by changing gears. Additionally, the torque converter and planetary gears generate a continuous power transmission, which provides a smooth ride for passengers and helps to prevent any fragile luggage from being damaged.

Allison’s fully automatic transmissions also help drivers to avoid making mistakes during gear changes, which protects the driveline, and adaptive electronic controls reduce maintenance by reporting when potential problems occur. “Allison recently introduced an advanced warning technology system – Prognostics – which is available on all new Allison transmissions. In combination with the use of TranSynd or a TES295 approved oil, the system monitors fluid and filters as well as transmission health and informs the operator of the status via an integrated display. Allison’s Prognostics results in easier routine maintenance and the elimination of unnecessary oil and filter changes,” comments Claus-Peter Geier, market development manager, Allison Transmission,Germany.
“This leads to increased reliability, which in turn cuts workshop expenditure and improves fleet utilisation while lowering investment costs.”

Rapid acceleration in case of emergency

In the event of emergency, Allison transmissions prove indispensable, particularly as fire brigades at airports must be able to reach every part of the runway system within 180 seconds. Allison transmissions transmit power without interrupting traction to the wheels, regardless of vehicle type. Vehicles using an Allison transmission can therefore accelerate more rapidly than vehicles with a manual or automated manual transmission, arriving promptly at the scene of an accident.
