DGC Asset Management, a boutique real asset investment consultancy specialising in alternative investments within the agricultural, timber and renewable energy sectors, have spoken out on the huge increase in enquiries from investors disillusioned with volatile returns, high inflation and low interest rates.
David Garner, Partner at the Northampton based business said: "Since the financial crisis of 07/09, investors have learnt the need to diversify their holdings outside of traditional financial assets such as stock, bonds and cash. Our Clients want to acquire physical assets that retain their value as they will always be in high demand and short supply such as productive agricultural land or commercial timber plantations."
Historically, investors have used alternative investment assets such as farmland and timber to hedge inflation as the value of such commodities tends to rise as demand increases from a growing population and economic expansion in developing nations.
"That's the reason sensible investors want in on these kind of alternative investments, the growth isn't dependent on finanical markets, but on consumption of essentials by real people." Added Mr Garner.
Many hedge funds and pension funds are aslo allocating capital to such projects, TIAA-CREF, on of the largest retirement funds in the U.S. recently partnered with AP2, the Swedish National Pension Fund, to invest $500 million into farmland in the US, Australia, Argentina and Brazil.
