Disc bulges usually result form a tear in the annulus fibers, which surround the outside of the disc. As this area weakens the nuclease of the disc, a jelly like substance, will work itself into the injured area occupying space it wouldn’t normally. This is what creates the bulging or herniation and will also increase the pressure around it. How does it work? Spinal decompression gently pulls the joint apart, creating a negative pressure or vacuum inside the disc that can draw the bulging material back into the disc thus relieving the pressure being exerted on the nerves. The cycling of stretching and relaxing the joint also helps pump out inflammation and promote the normal fluid exchange the disc needs to be healthy. You see, discs are unique in that they don’t have as much of a direct blood supply to them as the rest of the body. They get most of their nutrients from motion, as we move the discs work like a sponge - expanding and contracting. This pumps out the waste and inflammation and brings in the materials it needs to heal. This principal is why people suffering with disc problems are usually worse first thing in the morning or after sitting too long but feel better once they are up and moving around.

One of the biggest myths about pain is that it goes away all by itself, without any treatment. A May 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth false, showing that 75% of back pain sufferers who do nothing about it will have either pain or disability 12 months later.

One clinical study has shown non-surgical spinal decompression to be extremely successful (good or excellent relief) in 86% of patients with herniated discs and degenerative joint disease – without the side effects. One study presented at the American Academy of Pain Management in 2007 showed…

“Patients reported a mean 88.9% improvement in back pain and better function…No patient required any invasive therapies (e.g. epidural injections, surgery).”
